La Serenissima Wednesday, May 07, 2008

The Most Serene Republic, La Serenissima Repubblica. It is really a city like no other. I would love to go back and explore every street corner, every charming shop, admire the lovely homes with beautiful rustic palettes, the bridges, canals, gondolas, traghetti, vaporetti. It's such a blessed place on earth.

St. Peter's Church at the heart of the Vienna city centre needs €120,000 per year for maintenance and restoration.

Hohes Haus

The Austrian Parliament Building done on Greek Revival style. It's one of my favourite buildings in Vienna so far.

Wiener Staatsoper Wednesday, March 05, 2008

Vienna State Opera. It's currently playing Puccini's La Boheme, I'm not too familiar with it but I know it's where the broadway musical Rent is based from.
A tiny improvement on my Google Adsense earnings has got me posting again. And by tiny I mean a few cents. But it still counts for something.

Hofburg Theater Friday, February 29, 2008

In front of this structure is a large ice skating area where the young and old alike skate to K.T. Tunstall songs.

I am back and armed with an outdated 99-peso (that's USD 2.25) Budapest guidebook from the book sale at the top floor of Waltermart Makati!
The structure looks large from the outside, but it really is just a small chapel. It is a copy of a Benedictine abbey at Ják, Western Hungary. The ornate Romanesque façade is just a beautiful mix of patterns.
Olive and I bought cedar-scented rosaries for our mothers.

Chain Bridge

Or the Széchenyi lánchíd, the oldest of the seven road bridges that spans the Danube river, connecting Buda and Pest. It was destroyed during the time of the Nazis but rebuilt in its original form.

Goodbye Friday, September 21, 2007

JB and Grace, sharing a private moment. This photo is one of my favourites, but I wish the rest of the people were blurred. The luggage kind of ruined the scene, too.
Grand Market Hall, Budapest

The ground floor sells mostly produce and a variety of foodstuff-- paprika, fruit, Hungarian sausages, and other cured meats. The second floor offers souvenirs, cafes and food stations. I had purchased a small can of foie gras (goose liver pâté) thinking it was only 1000 HUF, only to discover that it actually costs four times as much (that's roughly $23). I am still not used to the way the Europeans write the number 4.

It is palpable. Monday, September 17, 2007

It is the most exciting place on earth, and also the loneliest: you get the feeling that no one cares whether you live or die.

Went on a whirlwind trip to Budapest with friends. Surprisingly, we had fairly good weather (albeit a bit erratic), which we didn't expect as it was raining the entire week. Blessings.

Kamzík Wednesday, August 22, 2007

We had lunch at the tower's restaurant the other day. The floor panels rotate at a rate of one revolution every 40 minutes, revealing panoramic views of three surrounding countries Austria, Hungary, and the Czech Republic. The experience was a wee bit nauseating, and the waiter has overcharged us by a hundred dollars (no, he did not get away with it), but the food, company, and the lovely view more than made up for it.

New Bridge Sunday, July 22, 2007

What a lovely night. Took a walk by the Danube riverbank, we wanted to span all three bridges, but we got lost on the way to Bridge Apollo... walked and walked until our legs hurt. Capped off the night with half a pint of pivo fresh from the tap, and some vino biele. It's enough to give me a buzz that would make for delicious sleep. Dobrú noc!

British coworker: So what did you do over the weekend?
Me: Oh we went to visit a CUSTLE. And you?
British coworker: Oh we went to Vienna to have coffee. (not verbatim :P)
So here's the CUSTLE. Which is called Bojnice (Boy-NEE-tse).
